The city of Buffalo NY has two theories to its name origin. The nice one is that upon seeing the Niagara river, french settlers exclaimed "
Beau fleuve!" and the pronunciation stuck storta, if not the spelling.
The other less appealing tale is that Buffalo was named for Buffalo creek. And Buffalo creek was named for people who sold horse meat on the river banks, false advertising it as bison meat.
